Nintendo Revolution

It was late 2005 and Nintendo execs were  toying around with names for their next-gen console, yet to be released. The execs came up with the name “Revolution” for their new console. This codename came about as a result of a brainstorming session at Nintendo HQ. They wanted to represent what they would offer to gamers.

They had believed that, with this next console release, their effort would start a revolution in gaming. Fans loved the name so it stuck. They had grown accustomed to calling their new wonder console by the appealing name of Revolution. In forums, chat rooms, blogs, and even TV media all had continuous updates on Nintendo’s latest attempt at a new game system.

Then, in late April of ’06, Nintendo had a change of heart for their console’s moniker. They chose a simpler name for their console would be a better choice. Despite the fans protests over the name change, Nintendo pushed forward with their new handle: Wii. Yes, simply Wii pronounced We in English. They had many reasons for abandoning the Revolution name and adopting the Wii as their system’s name.

They claimed that the Revolution moniker was not catchy enough and may confuse non-English speaking consumers with the long spelling.
Nintendo figured that Wii would be simpler for people around the world to pronounce. They also had symbolic meaning behind the name, the two i’s in Wii can represent two people playing next to each other or the nunchuck and remote combo.

The execs at the huge “N’ may be onto something because the Nintendo Wii has become the leading player in the next-gen wars. They truly have revolutionized the gaming industry with their offering. So, if you still can’t get over the name change, you can still call it a Revolution– because it is.
