Not too long ago, it seemed like button-mashing was the only viable way to play a game.  Then, in November 2006, Nintendo’s Wii debuted and showed us how to play the game differently– by changing how we use the joystick. The Nintendo Wii Remote is one of the greatest gaming controllers to hit the market. While that may sound like a bold statement, it’s one many players would agree with. The Wii Remote or “Wiimote” uses a series of motion sensors embedded within it’s casing. The cool factor comes into play when you take a punch in a boxing game and the separate sensor bar recognizes your movement, which in turn translates into your character swinging on-screen.

The cutting edge technology employed in the wiimote has limitless potential when it comes to possibilities for gaming uses. The wiimote comes with two AA batteries and will last up to 25 hours using both the accelerometer and pointer for gameplay. The accelerometer and optical sensor combination in the wand-shaped Wii remote has made a truly fun way to game.  Imagine swinging your swords as Luke Skywalker or even Prince of Persia. You can wack Ravin’ Rabbids heads like they were gophers popping out of golf holes– ala the ancient Caddyshack movies. How about canoeing by using your wiimote as paddles?! The list of various uses for the wiimote can go on forever.

Nintendo has hit on a fantastic, creative thought for their new console and the wiimote will change how we play forever. Games can now be acted out rather than played by button-mashing– a trend we thought would never go away. Thanks to the execs over at the huge “N”, we can start to look towards the future of gaming and have a glimpse of it via the Wii & Wiimote. Looks like there is lots of fun to be had on the horizon.
